Bluegrass, the often lonesome – sometimes happy sound of the hills. Created over sixty years ago by a proud Kentuckian named Bill Monroe, bluegrass music has grown from regional popularity to a worldwide phenomenon. Starting in the late 1930s, the world-famous Grand Ole Opry beamed Monroe’s high, lonesome sound, with its soaring vocals and dazzling fast-paced instrumentals, all over the United States. A new revolution in music was started, and the tradition has thrived ever since. Today, bluegrass is heard more and more on radio, television, at concerts and weekend long festivals across America and around the world. There are literally hundreds of bands playing bluegrass. Many have adhered to the original structures of the music as defined by Bill Monroe, while others have sought to expand those boundaries. The 2011 Bluegrass Calendar pays homage to the rich tradition in bluegrass and mountain music that has come to be known as the Stanley Sound. Introduced in 1946 when Carter and Ralph Stanley formed their first band – the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys, the tradition has thrived unabated for 64 years. The calendar spotlights high points of the musical story with photos of The Stanley Brothers, images of Ralphʼs 44-year solo career, prominent guests, and younger generations of Stanleys who are carrying the torch forward. In addition to the wonderful array of top-notch photography, the calendar features information on Stanley-related items of interest including the Ralph Stanley Museum and Traditional Mountain Music Center, the Ralph Stanley Fan Club, and Ralphʼs recent autobiography Man of Constant Sorrow, My Life and Times.
