Reb-7505 • Marshall Family • Legendary - Volume One |
The Marshall Family was the epitome of close family-style harmony singing. The group was comprised of siblings Dave, Judy, Ben, and Dan Marshall plus their father Chester, affectionately known as Pop. Instrumentally, they featured bluegrass picking. Mostly Judy and Dave handled the lead vocals but it was the blending of all of their voices in harmony that made them special. Ralph Stanley noted of their singing, “The most important thing about their music that makes it good is the close harmony – with feeling. You know, a lot of top groups have good harmony but they don’t seem to have any feeling. The Marshall’s seem to believe what they’re signing and that probably helps the feeling.” The group began their rise to prominence in 1974 when they appeared at Ralph Stanley’s festival at his old home place near Coeburn, Virginia. Under Stanley’s tutelage, the group quickly became established as festival favorites. A series of albums that were released on the Rebel label further added to their popularity. Their recordings featured a healthy dose of excellent original material, most of it written by either Dave or Judy. This collection is made of songs that they recorded for Rebel. Standouts include the lovely Judy Marshall original “I Just Want To Thank You, Lord” and the ever-popular “Children Go Where I Send Thee.” Tracks such as “Amazing Grace” recall the best of gospel music’s traditions. It’s hard to convey in words the emotional intensity of this group’s singing but if you enjoy sincere, heart-felt family-style harmonizing the Marshall Family is a must. |
