This reissue first appeared as a joint Copper Creek/Bear Family release back in 1991. The item remained in print for a few years and since that time has been unavailable. Bear Family has just recently made the disc available again as a part of their regular catalog. This is an excellent reissue that makes use of material that the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers recorded for the Cozy and RCA labels in the early and middle 1950s. The band started in the 1930s with an old-time sound that was not unlike the Delmore Brothers. In 1950, Bobby Osborne and Larry Richardson joined up, bringing high harmony singing and driving bluegrass style banjo. This group recorded four sides for Cozy in 1950. Osborne and Richardson are credited with writing all four tunes, including the classic “Pain In My Heart.” In 1952, the band signed with RCA and recorded some excellent bluegrass for that label. Included on the cuts were Curly Ray Cline on fiddle, Paul Williams on guitar and lead and tenor vocals, Ray Goins on banjo, Ezra Cline on bass, and either Charles Parker or Albert Punturi on mandolin. Later versions substituted Melvin Goins for Paul Williams. All of it was excellent. A nice history of the band and rare photos complete package. Excellent early bluegrass!!
