Starday-0956 • Stringbean Barnyard Banjo Pickin'

Kentucky banjoist and comedian Dave Akeman, better known to his many fans as Stringbean, had an illustrious career that dated back to the middle 1930s. He gained renown for work as a member of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in the middle 1940s. He added further to his bluegrass credentials by recording with Mac Wiseman in the early 1950s. With his trademark long striped shirt that came to his knees, and conversely short pants that likewise came to his knees, he entertained Grand Ole Opry audiences for many years with his old-time banjo stylings and comedic wit. Perhaps his greatest popularity came from his association with the hit TV show Hee Haw. In the early and middle 1960s, the bulk of Stringbean’s recorded output appeared in four albums that were released on the Starday label. This 2-CD set presents the best of those songs and tunes.
