This is the long-awaited follow-up to the first boxed set of the King recordings by Reno & Smiley that was issued in 1992. This collection picks up where the first one left off and begins with material that the duo recorded in 1959 for a collection of hymns; it ends with instrumental selections that were recorded for a banjo album. In all, material from ten different albums appear in the set: Hymns Sacred Gospel Songs (King-693), Wanted (King-718), Country Singing & Instrumentals (King-776), Banjo Special (King-787), Folk Songs Of The Civil War (King-756), Another Day (King-816), World’s 15 Greatest Hymns (King-853), The World Best 5-String Banjo (King-861), Variety Show (King-932), Last Time Together (SLP-485). 102 songs are spread over four CDs. The package comes with a 26-page full-color booklet containing information about the various recording sessions and a number of previously unpublished photos. There are a few unissued tracks and alternate versions of songs as well as several titles that appeared as 45 rpm singles. Reno’s fabulous songwriting that was so much in evidence on the first boxed set is greatly minimized here, but the spectacular Reno & Smiley duet sounds as good as ever on country standards, hymns, and new songs that were being supplied to the duo by King Records. Reno’s inimitable banjo work is absolutely fabulous on an excellent assortment of instrumental selections. This is a fine and essential collection of classic bluegrass and a must for any fan of Reno & Smiley. |
