Splendid 2-CD compilation that combines the first 46 songs that the First Family of Bluegrass Gospel recorded for the Starday label in the late 1950s. This colorful family group has enjoyed a long career and was recently rewarded for their years of entertaining with induction to the IBMA Hall of Honor. They have recorded for a number of labels over the years; this collection documents their earliest recordings. Their later recordings achieved a well-produced sound; these recordings – while generally well-recorded – are, perhaps, some of the most energetic recordings with lots of hardcore banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. A booklet with many rare photos contains a nice discussion of the recordings with comments on the songs from various Family members. |
