During the 1950s and ‘60s, the King and Starday labels did as much or more to record and promote bluegrass as anyone. While the major labels had artists such as Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs locked up, King and Starday amassed a sizeable catalog of bluegrass by artists such as the Stanley Brothers, Reno & Smiley, Jim Eanes, the Country Gentlemen, Buzz Busby, Carl Story, Red Allen, Hylo Brown, the Stoneman Family, and many others. This handsome 4-CD set features 100 songs from these two catalogs – discs one and two represent the King years while discs three and four showcase the best of Starday bluegrass. With a huge selection of songs and artists to choose from, there’s a great variety of material and styles. Expertly mastered from the original session tapes, this is a great sounding set and an excellent overview of these two historically important labels. The discs come with a 24-page full-color booklet that features many rare photos and interesting background information on the songs and performers. |
