In 1958, Jim & Jesse had been professional musicians for a decade. They were developing a fan base by working in the Deep South on several jamboree type programs, but they had no recent recordings currently available. To correct this situation, the duo contacted Starday Records and arranged for a series of sessions. Over a one-year period, Jim & Jesse recorded three sessions for Starday, creating a total of 14 masters. The material was issued mostly as singles. They had a great band with them – banjoist Bobby Thompson (often cited as one of the early proponents of chromatic style banjo playing), ace fiddler Vassar Clements, and bassist/vocalist Don McHan. Of the 14 tunes, they recorded: two instrumentals – one was the south-of-the-border sounding “Border Ride” and the other was “Dixie Hoedown” with Jesse McReynolds playing one of the twin fiddles; a song from the Louvin Brothers (“I’m Changing The Words To My Love Song”); several love songs; and six gospel selections – “They Can’t Love Jesus More Than Me” and “Let The Spirit Descend” were standouts. But, all of the 14 selections they recorded for Starday are excellent and rate as among the best material they ever recorded. This material has never been presented before in one package in the US (a 14-track album was issued in Japan about 20 years ago). It’s great to see their fabulous Starday tracks given serious attention. Recently mastered with great care from the original session masters, the sound on this collection is excellent.
