CCRS-7009 • Reno & Smiley Bluegrass Hits

In the early part of the 1957, the bluegrass duo of Don Reno & Red Smiley were eager to expand their horizons. They embarked on a recording venture with a fairly new label, Dot Records. Don Reno noted, "Dot seemed to be a flourishing outfit. We all thought they would [have better distribution]." The sessions were produced by bluegrass legend Mac Wiseman, who also added some vocal harmonies to a number of the songs. Their band at the time featured what is considered to be the classic edition of their Tennessee Cut-Ups, that which included fiddler Mack Magaha and bass player John Palmer. Ace musicians Benny Martin on fiddle and Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland on mandolin assisted the players. These selections have been praised for being "the most carefully produced recordings they ever made, and included what some people feel were some of their fi nest recordings." This material originally appeared on 45rpm recordings in the late 1950s. In 1963, it appeared as an album entitled Bluegrass Hits. Now, after an absence of over 40 years, this classic material makes its first appearance on CD.
