A handful of singers still know how to sing bluegrass music the genuine, old-fashioned, down-to-earth, person-to-person way. Mac Martin is one of the very best of that select group. So wrote the late Bill Vernon, in his liner notes that accompanied the LP release of this CD nearly a quarter of a century ago. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mac Martin has been a treasure trove of bluegrass music for 50 years. He recently celebrated his golden anniversary with a concert in his home city. For this occasion, Copper Creek released on CD an album that was recorded in 1977 for the now-defunct Revonah label. The label released nearly 50 albums over a 15-year period, and this is the first of a number of reissues slated for CD release. Although Martin seldom travels far from Pittsburgh, he has a loyal following among fans of traditional bluegrass all over the country. With a dearth of this classic material on the market today, Travelin’ On is sure to meet with hearty approval. |
