CC-0245 • Dick Kimmel & Jerilyn Kjellberg • Somebody Loves You Darlin' |
Minnesota-based musician Dick Kimmel has been a mainstay at Copper Creek since the early 1990s. Over the last fifteen years, he’s released six different recordings. His seventh, and newest, recording finds him in a duet setting with bandmate Jerilyn Kjellberg. While Dick and his band are known primarily as bluegrass unit, this recording finds him and Jerilyn presenting a collection of songs from the relaxed side of bluegrass. He notes, “There are some wonderful songs out there that tend to get lost in the loud, in-your-face style that is so often associated with this music.” In her notes to the recording, fiddler, songwriter, and rising star in the bluegrass community Becky Buller observes that Dick and Jerilyn have “stripped the songs in this collection down to the very core, letting the stories and their poignant melodies speak out clearly.” For the collection, they’ve resurrected several songs from old-time sources (“Katie Dear,” “Little Maggie,” etc.), from gospel (“The Sweetest Gift”), and contemporary venues (“Rose Of My Heart”) – the commonality between them all is sparse, yet glowing, treatment afforded by the duo. They even tackle hardcore bluegrass tunes like Bill Monroe’s “On And On,” recasting it in a more serene setting. The entire Dick Kimmel & Co ensemble will be supporting the project with numerous performances around their base in Minnesota. |
