Pete Pike is one of the early guitar and singing greats of hillbilly, country & western, twangy folk, bluegrass – whatever you want to call it. One of the first performers to bring that music to the clubs and shows of the Washington, D.C. area, he had two hit records that earned Billboard’s Five Star Pick Hit designation, ran one of the first bluegrass festivals and his TV show, Hayloft Hoedown, was one of the first five-day-a-week hillbilly TV shows. It paved the way for Hee Haw, gag acts and all. Today Pete Pike is a busy man, recording new songs, attending the many bluegrass festivals that now flourish in his home state of Virginia, and keeping in close touch with new talent. “Country bluegrass” is how he likes to describe the music he is making now. With his new CD, Rolling Again, recorded with the southern West Virginia-based Black Diamond Band, Pike ties together his long history. |
