CC-0236 • Curly Seckler Down In Caroline

Curly Seckler first got his start in music 70 years ago. The list of people he has played with reads like a who’s who of bluegrass and country music. His most famous job was a long-running stint with Flatt & Scruggs. His distinctive tenor vocals graced many of that duo’s best recordings for Mercury and Columbia in the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. In later years, when Flatt worked as a solo, Curly was there, too. Over the years, Curly recorded a number of solo projects for a variety of labels. This most recent outing finds Curly in a variety of settings, from full-blown bluegrass (with Dudley Connell), to simple, stripped-down duets, to solo songs with straightforward guitar backing where Curly gets to showcase his recent compositions. At 85-years-of-age, the songs on this CD might very well comprise Curly’s most introspective set of recordings. His singing – always a trademark of his – is as dynamic as ever. With an excellent assortment of songs – some old, some new, a choice group of hand-picked players, and Curly Seckler – in top form, a more fitting career capstone would be hard to imagine. Joining Curly is an all-star cast of pickers and singers including Kent Blanton, George Buckner, John Carter Cash, Laura Weber Cash, Dudley Connell, Rob Ickes, Josh McMurray, Russell Moore, Larry Perkins, Andrea Roberts, Chris Sharp, Herschel Sizemore, Kevin Sluder, Larry Sparks, Tater Tate, Leroy Troy, and Doc Watson.
