This is the third recorded outing for the popular old-time trio of Tom Sauber, Brad Leftwich, and Alice Gerrard. Their first two recordings were excellent mixes of songs and tunes. Here, the focus is primarily on their instrumental prowess. Sauber, a California resident, is an old-time banjo player with over 30 years of performance experience and he rates as one of the premier exponents of the style today. Leftwich is an Ozark native with musical roots in Virginia and currently resides in North Carolina. He is among an impressive list of fiddlers in old-time music, having absorbed his craft from a number of traditional Appalachian and Ozark musicians. Alice Gerrard resides in North Carolina where she produces the Old-Time Herald magazine. A respected, and legendary, performer in her own right, she was also one half of the Hazel Dickens – Alice Gerrard duo. She provides the sure and steady guitar rhythms heard here. With a generous 18 tracks, Tom, Brad & Alice serve up an excellent sampling of tunes from a variety of old-time sources. Some of these include Clyde Davenport (Kentucky), Pete Steele (Kentucky), Melvin Wine (West Virginia), John Kennedy (Oklahoma), Ed Haley (West Virginia / Kentucky), etc. Adding variety to the recording, Tom plays a variety of banjo styles including two-finger, fretless and clawhammer. He also plays mandolin, finger-style guitar, and teams up with Brad for several twin fiddle selections. Several vocal numbers are included as well. Excellent!!
