CC-0107 • Carter Family • Diamonds In The Rough |
Though a great part of the original Carter Family’s huge repertoire has been released on various re-issues in the past, most of this material has not been available in recent years: that makes this great release all the more of a major event for their many fans. Here we have the original trio – A. P. , Sara, & Maybelle – as they sounded broadcasting from Mexico in 1941, taken from extremely rare, recently discovered radio transcriptions. There are 16 songs presented – 12 of them duplicate commercial recordings of the 1920s and ‘30s and are so close to the originals as to be essentially indistinguishable. The great bonus here for the die-hard Carter fan is the inclusion of four songs never before available by the Carters – “Last Letter” and “My Old Pal Of Yesterday” (both sung solo by Maybelle) and “My Heavenly Home” and “Leaning On The Everlasting Arms. “ This is a superb, nicely packaged release that shows one of country music’s great groups in fine form. We hear Maybelle’s distinctive guitar, Sara’s wonderfully strong voice, and A. P. in excellent form as he introduces the songs and contributes a strong bass line. |
